Things I'd Tell My Daughter ยท Jul 7, 2026

Before You Start a Business, Read This Once

Everyone loves to say, "Just start."

And honestly, yes. Start.

But here's the part people leave out: don't just start randomly. Start with a tiny test.

You do not need the perfect logo, perfect name, perfect website, perfect content plan, or 47 notebooks full of ideas before you begin. But you do need to know what you're testing.

Are you testing whether people want the product? Whether they understand the offer? Whether they'll click? Whether they'll buy? Whether you even like talking about this every day?

That matters.

Because starting a business is not one giant brave leap. It is a series of small, slightly uncomfortable experiments.

So here's what I'd tell my daughter:

  • Pick one person you want to help.
  • Pick one problem you understand.
  • Pick one simple thing to offer.
  • Put it in front of real people.
  • Watch what they do.

Not what they say. What they do.

Do they click? Ask questions? Save it? Share it? Buy it? Ignore it?

That is information. And information is better than guessing.

"Just start" is good advice. But "start small, pay attention, and let the market teach you" is better.

The goal is not to look like a business on day one.

The goal is to learn what is worth building.

The family group chat version

Don't wait forever, but don't build a whole castle before you know if anyone wants to come inside.
