The Family Holiday Travel Checklist (So You Don't Forget Anything)

Family travel during the holidays has a very specific kind of chaos. Here's the checklist we actually use to keep it from turning into a full meltdown at the gate.

30 days before

  • Book flights/hotel/rental car if you haven't
  • Check passport or ID expiration dates now, not the week before
  • Start a running packing list on your phone so nothing gets forgotten at the last second

14 days before

  • Confirm any documents you'll need (ID, insurance cards, prescriptions)
  • Check baggage rules for your specific airline/route
  • Order anything you're bringing as a gift that needs to ship

7 days before

  • Actually pack, don't just plan to
  • Charge every device and pack the chargers with the devices, not separately
  • Pack snacks — more than you think you need

3 days before

  • Confirm any pet-sitting or house-sitting arrangements
  • Pack medications in a carry-on, never checked luggage
  • Download offline entertainment for the kids before you're stuck somewhere without signal

Don't forget list

  • Gifts (yes, people forget the actual gifts)
  • Chargers and a portable battery
  • Medications
  • Snacks for delays
  • Headphones for everyone old enough to want them
  • Travel documents in one dedicated folder or bag pocket
  • Emergency contact info written down somewhere that isn't just your phone

Travel-day tips

  • Build in more buffer time than feels necessary — holiday travel delays are their own category of chaos
  • Have one "activity bag" per kid, packed the night before, not assembled in the car
  • Snacks solve more problems than almost anything else you can pack

The family group chat version

You will forget something. Everyone does. Pack the big stuff right and let the small stuff go — a forgotten phone charger is a $15 problem, not a crisis.
