Things I Wish Someone Told Me Before Having a Family

Nobody sits you down and tells you the real stuff. So here's what I wish someone had told me sooner.

Family holidays get more complicated, not less

When it's just you, holidays are simple. Once there are in-laws, schedules, and other people's expectations in the mix, "just show up and have fun" stops being simple. That's normal. It doesn't mean your family is broken โ€” it means more people are involved now.

You don't have to make everyone happy

You will not find a plan that makes every relative equally satisfied. Someone will always wish you'd done it differently. Pick the plan that works for your household, say it plainly, and let the disappointment be theirs to manage, not yours.

The older your kids get, the more the traditions matter

When they're little, they don't remember most of it โ€” you're mostly doing it for you. Once they're older, the small repeated things (the same breakfast, the same drive to look at lights, the same dumb joke every year) become the actual thing they remember. Start something now, even something tiny. It compounds.

Your kids don't need a perfect childhood

They need a present one. A tired parent who shows up beats a "perfect" parent performing a version of childhood for social media. Put the phone down more than you photograph the moment.

Money stress doesn't have to be hidden from your kids โ€” it has to be handled calmly

You don't need to pretend everything's fine. You need to model what handling it looks like: making a plan, adjusting, not panicking out loud in front of them.

Ask for help before you're drowning

Not after. The version of you asking for help at "I'm managing, just tired" gets a much better response than the version asking at "I haven't slept and I'm crying in the pantry."

The family group chat version

Nobody has this fully figured out. Anyone who says they do is lying or exhausted and hiding it well. You're doing better than you think.
