Should You Travel for Christmas or Stay Home? A Decision Guide

This shouldn't be as hard a decision as it usually feels โ€” but guilt has a way of making it complicated.

Stay home if

  • Everyone's genuinely exhausted and needs actual downtime
  • You're already financially stretched this season
  • The travel itself (not the destination) is the stressful part
  • You did the big trip last year and nobody's asking to repeat it

Travel if

  • Seeing specific people matters more this year than usual (a health concern, a milestone, distance that's grown)
  • Everyone actually has the time off, not just technically-available time
  • You can afford it without it eating into January
  • You genuinely want the shared experience, not just the obligation of it

The guilt trap

A lot of holiday travel decisions get made out of guilt rather than desire โ€” "we should," not "we want to." That's worth naming honestly before you book anything. Guilt-driven trips tend to be the ones that feel the most draining, even when they go fine.

The Group Chat rule

Don't spend $4,000 traveling somewhere you don't even want to go because you feel guilty about not going. If the honest answer is "we'd rather stay home," that's a completely valid answer โ€” and it's better than resenting a trip the whole way through it.

If you do decide to travel

The family group chat version

The "right" choice is the one your actual household wants, not the one you think you're supposed to want.
